Nothing in our universe stands still : Earth revolve the sunlight , the sun encircle the galaxy , and even wandflower are constantly on the move . So why is everything in space in motion ?

It all comes down to how the universe and the objects within it were made , Edward Gomez , an astrophysicist and the education theater director at Las Cumbres Observatory , told Live Science . Scientists think the universe began with theBig Bang , a superfast expansion from an immeasurably dumb single point that eventually led to the formation of everything we see today .

Life’s Little Mysteries

The planets in our solar system orbit the sun and the sun circles the galaxy. So why is everything in space on the move?

" From the very beginning of the universe , it started expanding outwards because the strength of the Big Bang caused everything to move aside , " Gomez said .

" It ’s sort of the impression of the beginning , " saidCarol Christian , an astrophysicist and outreach project scientist for theHubble Space Telescopeat the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore . " The beginning was bowel movement , and so movement has been built into the universe from the very start . "

The planets in our solar system orbit the sun and the sun circles the galaxy. So why is everything in space on the move?

So one reason everything in space is in movement is because theuniverseis amplify . But that expansion has effects only on very large scale . " We only see it really happening on things that are very far apart or far away , because it ’s not necessarily that these objects are move through outer space , " Gomez say . " It ’s that the outer space in between objects is getting bigger . "

On smaller scale , though , rotary motion is the movement that rules physical object in space . " This spinning thing is kind of endemic in the universe of discourse , too , " Christian tell Live Science . " There is n’t anything that does n’t revolve . "

That ’s due to angulate momentum : When two objective in space move closely together , theirmutual gravitational attraction pulls them toward each other , and if they do n’t jar or fell in different focus , they tend to orb each other . This phenomenon affect everything , from the smallest mineral grains to the large galaxies .

" Thesolar systemwas made like a pizza pie is made … If you ’re make an Italian pizza , you throw the pizza dough up , and as you birl it , it flattens out into a disc , " Gomez said . " And that ’s essentially how our solar system is made : This affair called angular momentum , that spin force stretches things out into a disc . "

That ’s why the satellite in the solar system orbit the Lord’s Day : The solar system set out as a spinning the great unwashed of gas and debris that finally coalesced into a star and planets . Along the fashion , angular momentum ensured it never stopped spinning .

But a galaxy ’s twirl outcome bechance differently than you ’d expect from just the stuff we can see .

" It spins as if it were like a pizza pie cornerstone , as if it was solid instead of being made up of individual components , adept , " Gomez said . " It should be that the [ stars ] further out should be function dim than the ones in the center . But actually , you do n’t see that … and that ’s one of the first indicators that the universe had something dotty that you ca n’t see that we now calldark subject . "

— What does the edge of the solar arrangement calculate like ?

Dark matter does n’t interact with light , so we ca n’t see it with scope . However , it does have mass and interacts with other objects that have mass through gravitational effect . Dark subject also experiences angulate impulse . It ’s another reason everything in place is impress .

In the end , gesture is a fundamental factor in the existence . It " shows that the universe is awake — not in a sense of being witting , but you know , things are happening — chemical reactions , strong-arm reactions are happen , and that requires energy , " Gomez said . " And the most basic word form of energy is gesture . "
