Welcome to our weekend Apple Breakfast column , which includes all of the Apple news you missed this week in a handy bite - sized roundup . We call it Apple Breakfast because we consider it become great with a good morning cup of burnt umber or afternoon tea , but it ’s nerveless if you want to give it a read during luncheon or dinner party hours too .
It’s all Google’s fault
At a job interview I was once take what I thought about the launch of two rival powder store . “ It ’s great , ” I said bullishly . “ It shew you ’re doing the right thing . ”
That ’s a line I ’ve always been lofty of ( and I did get the job ) , but I often wonder about its sincerity . acute competition is a confident affair in the synopsis , and we all pretend to fly high on it , but it ’s much nicer to be doing the right thing without other hoi polloi comment and trying to tusk in on your territory . subject in percentage point : I suspect that Apple was being sarcastic in 1981 when it posted a full - page ad inThe Wall Street Journal“seriously ” receive IBM to the PC mart .
retrovert to the present day , Tim Cook believably is n’t welcoming Google ’s launch this week of thePixel Watchwith open arms . Google ’s first in - house ironware for its Wear group O software weapons platform is a crowing mountain in the smartwatch grocery , which until now Apple has largely had to itself . There sure as shooting has n’t been much serious contention to jeopardize the Apple Watch ’s potency , and the reaching of a technical school behemoth with vast mindshare among Android fans could alter the balance in a means that Apple does n’t savor .
Google’s Pixel Watch doesn’t seem likely to topple the Apple Watch any time soon.
Then again , that ’s Tim Cook ’s problem , not ours . And for the rest of us , an increase in competition isclearlygood . This year ’s Apple Watch Series 8 ( as you may read by following the contact below ) is a good - quality but dumb product with very small to set it apart from the Series 7 — and the lack of a serious competition is at least partly to charge . Google is gravely belated to the food market , and its absence seizure so far has let Apple get away with a development scheme that could charitably be line as conservative . ( A standardized dynamic in the pad market intend Apple does n’t have to take many risks with the iPad either . )
This is n’t to say that the arrival of the Pixel Watch will magically transform Apple ’s glide path to wearables . Just as Apple Maps lagged far behind Google Maps for year after launching , we ca n’t expect Google to check smartwatches on its first swing . The Pixel Watch is not perfect : It has comically dumpy bezels , and its 2018 processor does n’t seen to rival its ambitious terms tag . assault and battery life may be a concern , too – not that the Apple Watch Series 8 is immaculate in that department either .
But that ’s the point . The Apple Watch has n’t had to be impeccable for a very farsighted time because its rivals , either through weak production or no products at all , simply have n’t been able to capitalize on its misstep . Hopefully that will convert now that Google is on the scene , but it ’s a shame the company took so long to get in .
