A herpetologist in France has capture a singular pic of a snake suffocate as it attempted to eat a fish the size of its own read/write head .
While many ophidian specie deplete fish — and many can open their jaws wide of the mark enough to quaff down large fair game — the Pisces species in this case was invasive in this part of Europe . The scientist who spotted it says that the encounter should propel more research into the relationship between fish - eating snake and trespassing species .
A viperine snake swallows a ruffe.
Nicolas Fuento , a herpetologist at the nonprofit League for the Protection of Birds in France , encountered the viperine snake in the grass ( Natrix maura ) at Lac de Carcès in southeastern France . At first he thought the Snake River was merely trying to corrode the Pisces . But then he agnize the snake in the grass was struggle .
" The snake show unusual spasmodic movements in an apparent attempt to expel the Pisces , which appeared to be lodged in the snake ’s [ esophagus ] , " he and a confrere compose in a research Federal Reserve note describing the incident , published Sept. 10 in the journalHerpetology Notes .

Fuento and an intern helped remove the fish lodged in the snakes throat.
Fuento get an intern to obtain the snake while he tried to take the fish , but the fish ’s spines along its back were stuck in the ophidian ’s esophagus . So to get it out , he softly pushed the fish into the snake ’s mouth to shift the spinal column , " as if I were removing a hook from a fish ’s sass , " he tell Live Science in an electronic mail .
Once relieved of the fish , the snake did not come out to be injure and slithered forth under a sway , he order .
With the Pisces out of the snake ’s mouth , Fuento identified it as a ruffe ( Gymnocephalus cernua ) . Ruffes are small fresh water Pisces the Fishes aboriginal to portion of Europe and Asia , but the metal money has been introduced to North America and other parts of Europe , including France — and their ruffianly and spiny dorsal fins could make them hard for some predators to immerse .
Viperine ophidian expend most of their clip in and around water , eatingmostly fish , and their native range overlaps with ruffes in some regions , according to the paper . But the composition also noted that ruffes are an invasive specie in Mediterranean wetlands , where viperine snakes are rare and correct .
That decline has been have by several threats , include river pollution , wetland destruction and urbanisation , Fuento told Live Science . His newspaper publisher note that the ruffe ’s introduction could be another potential threat to the local Snake River population — although the actual impingement of the invasive fish on the Snake has not been study .

The paper points to other instance where Pisces - deplete snake in the grass in Europe , including viperine Snake , have die after eating incursive fish such as largemouth basso ( Micropterus salmoides ) , browned bullheads ( Ameiurus nebulosus ) and common sunfish ( Lepomis gibbosus ) .
But snakes can also die after mishaps while run through native fish too , the paper noted , and some snakes seem to have the ability to avoid " harmful alien fishes . "
" The goal of this clause is to quote a novel event of mortality by alien Pisces , " Fuento said . " And we hope that may lead to further research . "
