Thousands of gallons of ill - aimed pee could be spare from lavatory floor thanks to a new urinal design , scientists say .

Around 1 million liters ( 264,172 Imperial gallon ) of pee are spilled onto the floor and paries of public restrooms each Clarence Day in the U.S. thanks to current urinal shapes , creating hygiene exit and unpleasant reek .

The Nautilus and Cornucopia designs could significantly reduce urine splashback in public restrooms.

But now , in a new study release Tuesday ( April 8) in the journalPNAS Nexus , scientist have proposed a new urinal design that could significantly boil down this spill — ameliorate the hygienics of public john and reducing cleaning costs .

Urinals have not changed much since they originate becoming popular in19th - century Europe , as part of uprise public health reforms in tight - grow cities . There are now around 56 million public toilet facility across the U.S. alone , the scientists said in the study .

" Urinals are a staple of public spaces yet their designs have remained essentially stagnant for over a century , ” the researchers wrote in the discipline . " The use of goods and services of urinals often results in significant splatter ( splashback ) as piddle splashes upon impingement with the urinal generating droplet which travel back onto the floor and drug user . "

This splashback is a breeding undercoat for bacterium , resulting in bad aroma in public restrooms and the potential for the spread of diseases .

" The aerofoil of urinal have significantly higher concentrations of bacterium than traditional privy , with surrounding floors having the highest level , " the researchers added .

Some bathrooms attempt to reduce splashback using urinal screen , mats , or even spikelet to tell people where to aim their urine . Theuse of such stickersat Amsterdam ’s Schiphol airport was found to cut splashback by between 50 and 80 % and lower cleansing costs by 8 % .

New urinal designs are making a splash

To settle these job , the squad created a unstable physics mannequin of how a flow of liquid splashes when it hits a surface like the back of a urinal , and experimentally tested these models by spraying liquid at Earth’s surface at various angles .

They mime a stream of urine by make a " pseudo - urethra nozzle , " which had the same intragroup geometry as a human urethra , and used dyed liquid to better determine where splashback was occurring .

They line up that when the piddle stream hit the Earth’s surface at less than 30 degree , the level of splashback was reduce to only 1.4 % of the levels seen in a traditional urinal conception .

They used these models to designtwo new urinal frame , which they dub Cornucopia and Nautilus . The Cornucopia somewhat resembles a public applesauce can , while the Nautilus would n’t await out of place in an avant - garde article of furniture depot .

The researchers ' Cornucopia and Nautilus designs both achieved a meaning reducing in urine plash , with the Cornucopia performing best . However , the Nautilus was reckon the most idealistic figure due to its superlative , which would allow short people — include minor or those in wheelchairs — to more well use it . Its big gape would also be easier to clean house , and would be more accepting of poor aim , and therefore would also be appropriate for use on boats or airplanes .

The researchers suggest that if Nautilus was to replace the 56 million urinal across the U.S. , around 1 million liters of urine would be prevented from being splashed onto the floor every day . Assuming that the volume of piss necessitate to strip up spilled pee is about 10 time that of the volume of piddle , about 10 million l ( 2,199,692 gallons ) of fresh water could be saved every sidereal day , the scientists said .

The widespread borrowing of these urinal designs " would result in considerable preservation of human resources , monetary value , cleansing chemical substance , and urine usage , rendering heavy - scale impacts on advanced society by amend sustainability , hygiene , and accessibility , " the research worker write .
