Last week , the U.K. announce itslargest evermilitary support package for Ukraine . The bill brings the U.K. ’s total supporting for this financial year to £ 3 billion — not quite the $ 50 billion the U.S. pledge late , but still substantive .

But while most of those stock will be spent on very traditional military hardware , a Modern tech initiative launched last weekend was aimed at enhancing Ukraine ’s asymmetric war capableness against Russia . In fact , theLondon Defense Tech Hackathonwas the first - ever upshot to bring together some of the U.K. ’s brightest thinker in technology , venture upper-case letter , and interior surety in a military stage setting . The idea was to whoop together ideas to both wait on Ukraine and make a far more porous layer between the human beings of tight - paced civilian tech and the very unlike earth of the military .

The event was put together by Alex Fitzgerald ofSkyraland Richard Pass ofFuture Forces , and the two were bring together by conscientious objector - personal digital assistant that include the Honourable Artillery Company , Apollo Defense , Lambda Automataand D3 VC among others .

The event brought together developers skilled in both computer hardware and software program to further innovation in defense , home security , and deep technical school . There was a fundamental focus on lagger and their applications on the field of honor , both the computer hardware and the electronic system call for to flee them to their targets and antagonistic - drone system .

As most observers of the war have pointed out , this war has taken on a completely new attribute compared to previous wars . Today , drone pipe and electronic countermeasures are the order of the day , as Ukraine has endeavored to struggle off Russia , a much larger assailant , with asymmetric methods .

Fitzgerald tell me : “ There are three groups of people come to these events . There ’s the builders , investors , and the military . I opine for everyone , it ’s attempt to convince their colleagues to remember more about defense technology as an choice to either construct or invest in . ”

He explained that there were two principal tracks of work : electronic war and drone or aerial organisation : “ There ’s an acronym I learned from someone cleverer than me , which is that the future tense of defense technologies comes small , cheap and uncrewed . ”

He explained that one principal aim was to get multitude who had traditionally not been involved in defense either build up for or invest in vindication : “ We ’ve got people like the NATO Innovation Fund , the UK National Security Strategic Investment Fund . So yeah , it ’s a mix of the great unwashed who already invest in defence reaction or who have n’t thought about put before . ”

He take the hackathon format because “ the focus is on getting stuff done . Get actual constructor , not to just let the cat out of the bag about construction , because that ’s in reality where most of the innovation is happen . ”

One of the aspiration for the event was the recentEl Segundo , California , refutation tech hackathonin February of this twelvemonth .

“ I think the key thing with military technology is making it as soft to employ and as powerful as some of the consumer applied science that ’s been built , ” aver Fitzgerald . “ There ’s the classic line of business , ‘ There ’s more AI in a snap in Snapchat than there is often some most advanced military systems . ’ ”

Also attending the event was Catarina Buchatskiy , representingApollo Defense . As engineers focus over television camera , Starlinks , and monotone , she tell me : “ Defense tech is a difficult industry to enter . And it ’s a difficult market to break into , for obvious reasons . We ’ve found hackathons an extremely exciting way for people to get necessitate because defence engineering science can seem like a giant pitch-black loge of contracts that take 10 eld , and technology that are build [ are often ] shroud from the public middle . At a hackathon , you have 24 hours . Make something really cool . ”

She said the house had seen “ a lot of winner ” with theEl Segundoevent .

“ We just actualize that if people think it ’s something that ’s approachable to them [ and ] can do something speedily and make an impact , they need to participate , ” she evidence me .

Buchatskiy , who is Ukrainian , also speak potently about Ukraine : “ These are very real thing to me . When I say that I need a drone detector , it ’s because I ’m looking at one outside my window that we did n’t detect in time and it is going to kill my neighbor . That is the world that we present . ”

She added that it ’s important for hackathon attendees to make out “ that they ’re building for someone and this could actually save my kinfolk ’s life . ”

Despite the controversy beleaguer defense technology in some quarter , she added , “ To be involve in technology is to be interested in a better future . And I really , really ca n’t think of a more interesting and better future than one that ’s safe and one where we can secure peace . ”

NATO , in the shape of the NATO Investment Fund , a monetary fund with a billion euro to indue in refutation technical school over the next few years , was also represent .

stock better half Patrick Schneider - Sikorsky told me the fund was set up to back inauguration “ that bolster our corporate defense security and resiliency . We endue in double - use deep technical school , but the monetary fund was conceived before the warfare in Ukraine . The difference has now very much impacted our investment thesis and we ’re keen to invest in defense technologies that can make Europe safe and more secure . ”

But why was NATO funding a hackathon ?

“ I recall defense tech is raw to a lot of founder and a lot of developers , ” Schneider - Sikorsky said . “ It ’s not that well-off for them to understand the problem statements and the challenge and also to get access to the end user . ”

He said the hackathon format particularly lends itself to that : “ It would unremarkably , for many founders , take them months if not years to get in touch with the right-hand citizenry at defence ministry , and a mint of them are here today . So hopefully it will accelerate things well . ”

Another see investor , Alex Flamant from HCVC , evidence me : “ There was a motivation for people in Europe to endue in proper defense technologies . It seemed from the investor point of view , there ’s restriction around sure investors induct . One of the goal of this is to demystify what a wad of this is amongst young builders , and really to get the great unwashed more adjust with the bragging mission that we ’re all on . ”

Rula Awad , a car learning specialiser , was there to concentrate on drone detection : “ That ’s in our machine vision and object detecting cognition . Ukraine are fighting for the whole of Europe at the second and obviously the U.K. is pivotal to that . It ’s essential that we ally with them and utilize what we have to help oneself . ”

The hackathon came at a time of increased tenseness around the use of technologies in defense .

Google recently fired 28 employee after their sit - inprotestover the controversial Project Nimbus contract with Israel , for instance .

However , defense is clear rising up the tech docket .

Anduril recentlymovedahead in a Pentagon program to develop remote-controlled paladin jets , and more broadly as we take last yr , venture cap isopeningthe gates for defense tech .

And in the U.K. , there ismuch talkabout how luxuriously - powered optical maser could be among the next wave of weapons . The DragonFire artillery is said to be exact enough to strike a £ 1 coin from a kilometer aside , according to the MoD , and cost barely $ 15 to flame .

Theprojects to issue from the hackathonmay not have been quite so sci - fi , but they were pretty bloody close . How about a “ High SpeedInterceptorto take down Orlan Drones ” ? And at least they are probable to be deploy a lot sooner than a laser gun .
