Shared micromobility giant Lime is pilot two new vehicles design to appeal to women and older folks who might appreciate a broken footmark - through shape , small wheel and an acclivity from pedal - aid .

Lime has experiment with several young form factors over the years in a bidding to capture client and adapt to changing tastes and trends . Its efforts have paid off in some authoritative ways . The company managed tobecome profitableat time in an industry where most others – like Tier , Bird and Spin – have struggled to stay afloat . In 2023 , Lime pulled in more than $ 90 million in adjusted Earnings Before Interest Taxes Depreciation and Amortization , which the ship’s company enounce is more than a 500 % step-up over the previous class .

To maintain its prevalent position , Lime needs to gain over even more riders . And being more inclusive does n’t hurt the caller ’s luck at winning metropolis contracts .

Both of Lime ’s new vehicle – the LimeBike and the LimeGlider – are base on the same platform , but with a few tweak . The LimeBike is Lime ’s next generation einsteinium - bike , following the company’sGen4 bicycle that it debut in 2022 . The LimeGlider has the public presentation and weight of an e - motorcycle , but with a moped feel .

Lime is piloting the next - gen ebike in Atlanta and Zurich , Switzerland this week . Meanwhile , the Glider is expected to come up to Seattle and Zurich in August and September , respectively . Lime sound out it will put 200 to 300 of the fomite in each city to test if the fresh designs are attracting rider in the way it hop .

“ At its core , these products are intend to not only invoke to our current riders , but to reach out to new riders , ” Jason Parrish , Lime ’s senior director of merchandise direction , told me as we stood next to the new bikes at Bushwick Inlet Park in Brooklyn . “ We talked to lots of family about what they like about our vehicle , what they might care to see different , and one of the base we get word is that there were some group of people that just did n’t feel like micromobility is for them . ”

The data back that averment up . Lime says that around 70 % of its riders are men , and its median user age is 33 .

This is n’t the first prison term Lime has introduced new vehicles in an attempt to attract raw riders . In 2021,Lime test electric mopedsin Washington , D.C. and New York City . It quietly wipe out them off a year by and by , and then started try itsCitra motorbikein Long Beach . That vehicle in the end was n’t added to Lime ’s fleet , either .

So what ’s unlike now ?

Lime says its past failures as well as data on how mass ride has inform its new scheme . It also built these new models using parts that overlap with its existing scooters and cycle , cause them easier to doctor .

And finally , these vehicles are more focused on giving some riders what they ’ve asked for : smaller and more approachable underframe with more storage and a broken centre of attention of gravity .

Both the Bike and the Glider have smaller roulette wheel – 20 inches , compare to 26 inches on the Gen4 cycle – with a scummy step - through height , which make it easier to hop on and off .

They also have big front baskets – Lime says the biggest in the manufacture – that are work to jibe food market bag . Lime ’s design squad also added holes in the bottom to permit moisture and trash find its fashion out . Parrish noted that Lime would be test out rear baskets in sure markets on both vehicle .

Other change to the fresh vehicles include a novel phone holder that ’s less of a spidery rubber grip and more of a static clinch , and is typeset at an angle that ’s optimized to be able to see your screen during a bright day .

“ We also commute the display , it ’s now decently below the sound , so it ’s all form of one continuous curing of information ” said Parrish . “ We simplified the battery gauge down to just a stamp battery metre , and it ’ll tell you the speed you ’re going . And depending on if you ’re in a dull ride zona or no operate on zone , different icons will show up to transmit that message to you . ”

Another modification that is coming to both bikes let in a status light , interchangeable to the ones on Lime ’s e - scooters , which allow riders to see from across the road if the vehicle is quick to rent . rider will also be able to enjoin the two vehicle apart because the LimeBike is green and white , but the LimeGlider is all unripened .

First ride: LimeBike

My first thought jump off on the LimeBike immediately after taking the Gen4 for a twisting was that it did , in fact , feel little . And it was easier getting on and off the LimeBike than its predecessor .

While everything like the height of the handlebar and the length between the seat and the handlebar were the same , I noticed an improvement in the ergonomics of the handles themselves . Rather than a rounded hold , this one has a flat palm area to rest your deal .

The LimeBike also has a throttle , in addition to the pedal help . This addition is partly found on feedback from customers who do n’t want to perspire on their manner to sour .

“ What we in reality see is that some people might get out with the throttle to get up to speed faster , but then they still like to pedal , so it gives them more choice , ” said Parrish .

That gas pedal is on the right side , and the Vanessa Stephen is on the left , which conduct just a touch of getting used to .

The Bike is also lighter than the Gen4 , which assist when you ’re trying to choke up it over a curb to park it after a drive . I actually physically could n’t lift the Gen4 front wheel off the ground , a humbling realization . The Gen4 feels heavy because the battery is on the down tube of the systema skeletale ( or the neck , as I refer to it in my mind ) . Whereas with the LimeBike , the stamp battery is under the seat , making for a scurvy heart of somberness that also feels more unchanging . I managed to tease with no hands for at least five whole seconds .

In fact , I came aside from my ride thinking that the LimeBike feel leisurely to handle , robust and sturdy , even as I advisedly raced it over Brooklyn ’s fine rocky roads .

First ride: LimeGlider

The Lime Glider is establish on the same chopine as the LimeBike , but without pedals .

The idea with the Glider is that it ’s as effortless as a stand scooter , but more well-situated to sit down down and enjoy . It ’s also not a in high spirits - speed vehicle , so it is drive in the bike lanes .

The hindquarters is more of a moped seat than a wheel can , and while it finger like it can well seat two riders , Parrish says that ’s not the point of it . Really , it ’s so long because shorter people will need to ride towards the front , and taller riders will sit towards the derriere .

I should also note that I had my heavy backpack in the front basket , and found that because of the low center of gravity of the vehicle , I did n’t feel like my bag impact the stability of the ride .

The Glider also bring home the bacon a solid drive with decent soaking up over bumpy roads and a   smooth quickening that helped me dodge and tissue through Brooklyn ’s traffic . This is the type of vehicle that I ’d ride for foresighted distances or if I were wearing a skirt and heel , because it really is as easy as baby-sit down and going . Or standing up ! I rally for a few occlusion brook up to give my depleted back a fault , and it felt even more stable than twit an due east - scooter .
