leopard , chetah , Egyptian maus — a kind of cats have arresting spot . Others , liketigers , have streak ; still others , likelions , lack radiation pattern on their coats . But how do cats get their spots , specifically ?

Scientists do n’t have a consummate result to this doubt , but they ’ve uncover many clues .

Life’s Little Mysteries

Egyptian maus have spots.

" We do n’t know why some computed axial tomography have spots and some cats have stripes,“Dr . Greg Barsh , a professor emeritus of genetic science and pediatrics at Stanford University , told Live Science . But researchers have identified two genes that affect the size and shape of patch — as well as stripes — in both domestic cats and wild feline .

Domestic cats with one or two normal transcript of a factor address Taqpep have stripes , Barsh and workfellow describe in a 2012 paper published in the journalScience . But accord to this same paper , as Live Sciencepreviously describe , cats with mutations in both copies of this gene ( one from their female parent and one from their father ) have pelt that is mottle or whorled .

These Taqpep mutations give rise to the pattern of the definitive tabby cat cat , Leslie Lyons , a cat geneticist at the University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine , told Live Science .

Taqpep mutations can also qualify spots — at least in cheetahs . chetah are know for having fatal spots on a yellowish - tan background . But " king cheetahs " — which have mutation in both copies of the Taqpep cistron , according to the 2012 Science paper — have expectant , blotchy spots . Along the back , the blotches ordinate themselves into stripes .

Although spotted domesticated cats are evidently not stripe , they appear to have a normal version of Taqpep , harmonise toEduardo Eizirik , a prof of genetic science at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul in Porto Alegre , Brazil . As part of a study publish in the journalGeneticsin 2010 , he mated a spot domestic cat with a splotched one .

King cheetahs have blotches that align themselves into stripes.

Eizirik and his colleagues close that the spotted cat he started with — an Egyptian mau — must have had a normal Taqpep gene , because some of its descendant had streak . The team also surmised that one or more other genes in the spotty bozo had the effect of fail up the stripes that Taqpep would normally cause and turn them into spots . It ’s still unclear what those other genes are , he said .

Another gene that seems to affect spotting is Dkk4 , according to Barsh . The Abyssinian breed of domestic cat has one or two mutate copies of the Dkk4 gene . Its pelage , at a glance , seems to be a substantial brown or cinnamon vividness . Another way of life to view it , however , is as a coat peppered with tiny black spots , Barsh say .

Servals are waste felid with large spots , and they have two normal copies of Dkk4 . Therefore , if you cross an Abyssinian cat with a Felis serval , as has been done , some of the issue inherit one normal written matter and one mutant copy of Dkk4 , Barsh explain . These offspring have spots that are heavy and sparse than the pepper spots on the Abyssinian parent but small-scale and more numerous than those of the serval parent .

" This is a very percipient example of how the [ Dkk4 ] gene can affect the identification number and the size of spots on the animal , " Barsh order .

Although mutations in Taqpep and Dkk4 can modify spots and stripes , these genesdo not by themselves control whether cat have spots or stripes in the first place . A Panthera tigris with a normal Taqpep gene has stripes , while a cheetah with a normal Taqpep gene has spot , Barsh say . While mutations in Taqpep can make a cheetah ’s maculation become blotched , the blot do n’t turn into chevron .

And as Eizirik ’s work show up , domesticated cat with a normal Taqpep gene can be either striped or espy . " There must be something else yet , a third gene , that is facilitate to create those blot , " Lyons said .
