A bizarre , " horned " spiral of light recently photobombed a vibrant dayspring display above Europe . The misshaped lambent vortex was painted in the sky by a dyingSpaceXrocket , but it is unlike any light-colored show we have seen before .

The stunning wandflower - like spiral appeared above parts of Poland , Lithuania and the Czech Republic on May 2 at around 9:00 p.m. GMT ( 4:00 p.m. EDT),Spaceweather.com report . Around 90 minutes earlier , a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket carrying a pair of Earth - reflection satelliteslaunched from the Vandenberg Space Force Basein California .

The SpaceX spiral and its surprise horn-like appendages were clearly visible in the skies above Rzeszów in Poland.

The swirling light show is an good example of what research worker commonly call " SpaceX spirals , " which are made up of fuel dumped in space by Falcon 9 rocket engine soon before they accrue back to Earth and burn up in the atmosphere . The fuel freezes into flyspeck crystals that chew over sunlight and form the conformation of a spiral because the rocket engine spin as they discard it .

Normally , these helix have a perfect vortex form . But photos of the late spiral above Europe show this spiral had two vague , cornet - like pillars of illumination , which have not been see in any premature spiral . It is not clear what caused the horns to imprint , but it is probably tied to how the rocket underprice its fuel , Spaceweather.com reported .

The light show only lasted for around 10 minutes before disappearing totally as the glacial fuel begin to disperse .

As the die spacecraft reenter the standard pressure , they release chemicals that can respond with ionise atomic number 8 in the upper atmosphere , causing the molecules to recombine into normal particle andtemporarily emit bright red light like an aurora . Scientists call this an " atmospherical yap , " and such holes are alsobecoming more commonas the rate of SpaceX launching prove .
