Thetrio of lakesin this striking image each have a dissimilar color thanks to a combining of ingredient including depth , water system chemistry and inhabiting wildlife . This is very foreign , not only because of the lakes ' law of proximity but because in the not - too - distant past times ( geologically verbalise ) , they were once part of the same ancient lake , according toNASA ’s Earth Observatory .
At ground level, the distinct green hues of Lake Abijata are much less obvious.
The three lake are Lake Shala , which has a deep - blue chromaticity ; Lake Abijata , which is green ; and Lake Langano , which has a sandy - yellow hue similar to the surrounding landscape painting . The threesome is located in Ethiopia ’s Great Rift Valley , around 125 mi ( 200 kilometers ) in the south of the country ’s capital , Addis Ababa .

Lake Shala is around 7.5 miles ( 12 km ) long and 17 miles ( 28 klick ) across at its widest point . It is the deepest of the three lake , with a maximum astuteness of 873 foot ( 266 meters ) , which is why its waters appear drab aristocratic from above . It is a tonic lake , stand for it is highly alkaline ( has a very high pH ) . Despite the extreme weather condition , the lake contains a large number of little crustacean and microorganisms that endorse large mountain of chatter flamingos and pelicans .
Lake Abijata , which is around 11 mile ( 17 klick ) recollective and 9 miles ( 15 kilometre ) wide , is the shallowest of the three lake , with a maximal depth of 46 feet ( 14 m ) . As a result , it is extremely variable and has lost around one - third of its area over the last 50 years . The lake ’s green color is most likely due to a bloom of youth of phytoplankton on its surface , which also attract a large number of bird .

Lake Langano is around 11 miles ( 18 kilometer ) long and 10 miles ( 16 km ) across . It is fed mostly by streams to the eastern United States , which dump brown sediment from nearby mountains into the water — turn over it its yellow color . Langano is a pop name and address for beachgoers because it is the only lake in the area not inhabited by parasitic worm that can transmit a potentially fatal disease sleep with asschistosomiasis .
However , until around 10,000 year ago , the three lakes were part of a single monolithic body of water , named Lake Galla , which disappeared after changing rain radiation diagram and tectonic motion altered the surrounding landscape painting .
