An archeological team in Venezuela has break 20 rock art site that date back thousands of years in Canaima National Park , in the southeastern part of the body politic .

While archaeologists have incur similar rock art designs elsewhere in South America , the newfound art " represent a new culture previously unknown,“José Miguel Pérez - Gómez , an archeologist and researcher at Simón Bolívar University in Caracas who is leading the squad , told Live Science in an email .

Some of these design , which researchers call " pictograms , " were draw in red and depict geometrical motive such as furrow of dose , row of X ’s , superstar - form patterns and straight lines that connect together to form a diversity of intention . The research was present at the " New Worlds New Ideas " prehistoric archaeological congress held in Valcamonica , Italy from June 26 to 29 . A paper that discussed one of the rock-and-roll art sites was published in November 2023 in the journal Rock Art Research .
